Newport: Barbara V. King 80 died Nov. 6, 2004 at a Pittsfield healthcare facility following a long illness. She was born in Plymouth Aug. 2, 1924 the daughter of Horace and Hazel (Carter) Macdonald. She attended Plymouth schools and was a graduate of Newport High School class of 1941. Barbara was married to Lawrence W. King who died April 21, 1972. Barbara was a cook and restaurant owner operator for much of her life. She was a hot lunch cook at the Plymouth school for several years. Following this she and her business partner Frank Banks owned and operated the Riverbank Restaurant on Water St. in Newport for several years. Barbara and Frank then bought Shorette’s Diner in Newport and operated it for over 30 years. Barbara was a very active member of the Grange. She was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Sebasticook Grange in Newport and also held all the officers’ positions at one time or another. She was a member of Pomona Grange, and a member of the Maine State Grange where she was a past Director of the Committee for Women’s Activities. She was a member of the Victoria Rebekah Lodge in Newport and a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Newport. She was a member of the High Street Congregational Church in Newport.

She is survived three sons and their wives Donald and Cheryl King of Newport, Dennis and Deborah King of Orono, Dwayne and Susan King of East Corinth, two daughters Rebecca and her husband Michael Jones of Newport and Beth Byron of Newport, one brother and his wife Carlyle and Mary Stackpole of Plymouth. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; Melissa Gallison, Michelle King, Ryan King, Benjamin King, Jamie King, Tabatha King, Michael Cote, Jeffery Cote, William Cote, Kelly Byron, 7 great grandchildren; Zachary, Jonathan, Lindsay, Katie, Ethan, Logan, and Elle, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her brother Harland Stackpole predeceased her.

Friends may call Tuesday Nov. 9, 2004 from 2 to 3 and 6 to 8 PM at the Brown Funeral Home 34 high St. Newport. Funeral services will be conducted 1 PM Wednesday Nov. 10, 2004 at the Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Al Worden officiating. Burial will be in the family lot Riverside Cemetery Newport.
