Donald J. Pelkie
He attended schools in Hartland and married the love of his life, Glenice Perkins. He was a hard worker all his life, including 43 years at Irving Tanning, 35 of which were as a foreman. Over the years, in his “spare time”, he farmed, cut wood, sold bottled gas, aluminum windows, doors and siding. He also served on the Hartland Board of Selectmen from 1950-1957. Donald had a great passion for gardening and watching vegetables and flowers grow. He filed saws for many folks in the area as a hobby.
He is survived by three daughters, Gloria Pelkie of Hartland, Donna Pelkie of Augusta, and Jacqueline Brooks and husband Foster of Hartland; a sister, Joyce Halford of Hartland; four grandchildren, the Rev. Kevin Brooks and wife Tammi, Dawn Butler and husband Randy, Richard Brooks and wife Kim, and Lt. Col. Mark Brooks and wife Sarah; eight great grandchildren, Nathaniel, Alethea Schanz and husband Stephen, Thaddeus, Benjamin, Kyle, Jacob, Julia, and Hope; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Glenice; parents Emerson Pelkie, Sr. and Iva Pelkie Ordway; brothers Emerson Jr. and Kenneth, and sisters Doris Emery, Jennie Howard, Marguerite Mills, Kathleen Pelkie, and Jean Chadbourne; and great grandson Zachary.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends, including a very special lady in his life, Ethel Taylor. He will also be missed by a dear friend Byron Ballard, Jr. who drove him to many appointments, or just took him for a ride or out for lunch. Donald had a special love for his dog Max, who was always by his side. Donald adored his granddaughter Dawn and her husband Randy who were always there and did so much for him behind the scenes. The family wishes to express special thanks to the workers of Care and Comfort , especially Sheila and Haley , whose care allowed Donald to stay at home for the last year of his life.
A spring graveside service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 152, Hartland, with the Rev. Kevin Brooks officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Those who wish may leave written condolences at www.CrosbyNeal.com
