Elizabeth A. Nieuwland, 82, of Old Orchard Beach, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009 at the Maine Veterans' Home in Bangor. Born May 6, 1926 in Portland, she was the daughter of G. Alice (Donahue) and Carl Leavitt.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Robert Lockhart, and two grandchildren, Julianna and Thomas, all of Dexter.

She was a graduate of Thornton Academy and Gorham Teachers' College. Later in life, she received her master's degree in English from the University of Maine. She proudly served her country as a U. S. Marine, stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii in the early 1950s. She worked for the American Red Cross, the Portland Public Library, and the Maine Department of Human Services.

Writing was Elizabeth's passion. She was published in numerous local and national magazines and newspapers. Her humor and quick wit will be missed by all.

At her request, there will be no public funeral services. Donations in her memory may be made to any public library or animal shelter.
