OBITUARIES

ELSIE M. HOLT
CORINNA – Elsie M. (Crowell) Holt, 93, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday October 15, 2002. Beloved daughter, wife, mother, nana and meme, Elsie was born August 23, 1909 at North Newport a daughter of Wilson and Annie (Gilman) Crowell. She graduated from Corinna Union Academy. Although she excelled inmathematics, it was unusual for a female to even consider a degree in that field; but she persevered and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, Class of 1932, majoring in mathematics. Elsie was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She taught school at Frankfort High School and later served as school principal as one of the first female principals in the state. She married her high school sweetheart, Edward Barry Holt, Jr. on July 29, 1933 in Portland, and resided in North Newport. Elsie taught school at Corinna Union Academy and coached prize speaking, one act plays, and track. She was continually blessed by her many students who, through the years, have expressed gratitude for her “work well done”. Elsie also lent a hand as a telephone operator at the family business, West Penobscot Telephone Company. She served on many church and civic committees, such as the school board and the original SAD # 48 consolidation committee. She attended the North Newport Church with her family, where she learned to play the pump organ by lamp light. As she was too young to reach the pedals herself, she needed someone else to pump the organ. After moving to Corinna with her husband and their daughter Maryanne, she became an active member of Morse’s Corner Baptist Church. She was very active in the Morse’s Corner Circle with her mother Annie Crowell. Elsie enjoyed organizing and working on church events, especially the Old Home Sunday gatherings. Several years ago she was honored for serving as church organist and choir director for 50 years. She was a member of the Corinna Literary Club, and the Sebasticook Garden Club. She was an avid fisher and sports person. She enjoyed tellingstories of Moosehead Lake fishing trips to her family and friends, and was a faithful companion to Barry during his fall hunting trips. Elsie was an accomplished gardener, interior decorator, crafter, and painter in oils. She was predeceased by her husband Barry in 1973; a brother Elliot; and her traveling companions Meredith Smith and Lillian Burrill.

She will be sadly missed by one of her closest friends, Martha Hatfield of Corinna and Florida; two daughters, Maryanne and husband Edric P. Starbird of Bar Harbor, Judy Richards and husband Ronald Richards of Corinna; 5 grandchildren, Scott Starbird and wife Valerie Singleton of California, Russell and wife Alisa Starbird of Houston, Texas, Edric N. and wife Caroline Starbird of Englewood, Colorado, Shawn and wife Julie Richards of Corinna, and Heather Richards of Cape Elizabeth; 9 great grandchildren, Ryan, Gregory, Castine, Katrina, Renata, and Siena Starbird, Jordan, Kelsie and Kylie Richards.
