BAR HARBOR & NEWPORT – Evelyn F. MacGown, 94, formerly of Camp Benson, Newport, passed away December 24, 2002 at a Bar Harbor health care facility. She was born May 21, 1908 at Bangor a daughter of Frank and Jessie (Stearns) Friend. She graduated from high school and business college, and had been employed for many years by the Veterans Administration at Togus. She was also a co-owner and office manager of Commercial Communications, as well as a part-time medical secretary. Evelyn was a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church in Bangor, and the People’s United Methodist Church in Newport, where she sang in both choirs. Evelyn was one oftwelve founders of Eastern Maine Friends of Retarded Children and served many years as its president. She was a member of the Nokomis Chapter # 42 Order of The Eastern Star of Newport and was also a past member of the Bangor-Brewer Soroptimist Club of Bangor. She was asked by the National Education Association Journal to write the story “Stevie’s Teacher”, which was published in December 1955. She was predeceased by her husband Lauris, and a son Stephen.

She is survived by a son, Douglas of Bar Harbor; a niece Carol Friend; a nephew Larry Friend; and her dear friends, Betty White and Sylvia Marson Young. Evelyn spent her life giving of herself to the betterment of others. She was a devoted wife and mother and her cheerful and serene disposition made it easy and pleasurable for her family and friends to confide in her. She will be missed.

There will be no calling hours.A memorial service will be held at a future date. Interment will be in the family lot, Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Memorial contributions may be made to H.O.M.E., Inc.,Orland, ME 04472. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home,Newport.
