He was born August 25, 1930 in Wilton, a son of Linwood and Etta Louise (Stinson) Cushman. He attended schools in East Wilton and Wilton Academy, graduating from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Class of 1949. He attended Farmington State Teachersí College for two years before enlisting in the Air Force. After serving four years, he returned to Farmington, graduating in 1957. He received his Masterís and CAS from the University of Maine at Orono.
Hartland dedicated his career to education starting as a fifth grade teacher at N.H. Fay School, Dexter, in 1957. He later became principal of N. H. Fay and Dexter High School, before becoming Assistant Superintendent of SAD #48 in Newport. He served there as Superintendent of Schools from 1966-1988. After retirement he was an interim Superintendent for SAD #3, Unity, and SAD #53, Pittsfield.
He belonged to the Dexter JayCeeís, was a 25-year member of Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis, a past president of Maine School Superintendentís Association, a member of the Dexter School Board, the Dexter Utility District, and was also a member of the Dexter Golf Course for many years. After his retirement, he was fortunate to enjoy many years at camp on Sibley Pond in Pittsfield, take many golf trips, and travel to Hawaii and Alaska.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Rita (Dahlgren) Cushman; daughters Camille Wolfertz and husband Weston, of Scottsdale, AZ and Long Island, ME and Lisa Cushman of Topsham; a brother, Wendell Cushman and wife Debra of Columbia, CA.; a grandson, Owen Wolfertz and husband Alex of New Market, NH; a granddaughter Alexis Wolfertz and significant other Brian Lee of Stratham, NH; brothers-in-law George Gray of Newport and Maynard Dahlgren and wife Wanda of Pittsfield; sisters-in-law Elaine Doughty of Hollis, and Wahneta Dahlgren of Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews and many special friends. He was predeceased by his parents and a twin brother, Howard Cushman.
Graveside committal services will be held in the spring at Pittsfield Village Cemetery.
