OBITUARIES

JOSEPH ELI STEFANIK, SR.
CORINTH - Joseph Eli Stefanik Sr., 70, died April 7, 2002, at a Bangor Nursing Facility. He was born Oct. 11, 1931, in Freeland, Pa., the son of the Late John and Mary (Branz) Stefanik. As a child, Joe's family moved to Baltimore, Md., where he grew to love professional sports, especially the Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Orioles. Joe left Patterson Park High School his senior year to join the U.S. Navy, where he served 20 years of dedicated service. As a Yeoman, he served aboard several ships, among them were the USS Ranger, the USS Forestall, and the USS Intrepid. He served as a court reporter in Naples, Italy and his last assignment, prior to retirement was at the Bureau of Navel Personnel in Washington, DC, where he met and married Nita Greatorex, the mother of his four children. After retiring from the Navy, Joe moved to Corinth, where he continued his love of sports by joining the Wednesday Night Bowling League at Family Fun Lanes in Bangor, where he served as president for several years. He also coached the Corinth II Farm League for three years. When Joe suffered from his first stroke in 1997, he moved from Corinth to Kenduskeag, where he lived until he entered the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor in January of this year.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (Stefanik) and her husband, Jason Albert of Glenburn; sons, Jack and his wife, Shannon of Orrington, Joseph Jr. and Renee of Corinth, Luke and Jessi of Houlton; seven grandchildren, Riley, Ty, Jaelen, Destiny, Daimian, Trey and Keanen; sister, Ann (Stefanik) and her husband, Dwinal Rideout of Brewer; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased two sisters, Marie Stefanik and Angeline Sly; and two brothers, Francis and John Stefanik.

Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday April 9, 2002, at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 754 Ohio St., Bangor, with the Rev. Frank J. Murray, pastor, presider. Interment will be held at a later date.
