VERGENA H. LEE
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Vergena H. Lee, 89, wife of the late Stanton M. Lee, died Feb. 6, 2002, at a local hospital. She was born Jan. 3, 1913, in St. Albans, the daughter of Ora Leon and Winnie (Cooley) Herring. Vergena grew up on a farm outside of Dover-Foxcroft with four brothers and two sisters. Following graduation from Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1932, she worked in a local dry cleaners as a presser, and then for the American Thread Spool Mill. After the spool mill closed, she went to work for the American Woolen Co. and spent many years there as a spinner. When the woolen company closed in 1953, Vergena and Stanton and their family moved to East Millinocket, and then in 1966, to Tolland, Conn., where they remained until Stanton's retirement in 1982. During their retirement years, they spent winters in Winter Haven, Fla., and summers at their cottage on Sebec Lake. As a homemaker, Vergena also enjoyed hobbies of rug making, ceramics, and knitting. Vergena was a member of Central Grange No. 121. She received a 75-year continuous membership certificate on Sept. 1, 2001.
Vergena is survived by one brother, Durward Herring of Las Vegas; two daughters, Marilyn and her husband, Haldon Young of Tolland, Conn., Christine Thornton of The Colony, Texas; a son, Lawrence and his wife, Kathleen Lee of Fremont, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Lora Gray of Orange City, Fla.; nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Stanton; a son, Glenwood Gray; two sisters, Carletta Pitt and Louise Chapman (also deceased on Feb. 6, 2002); and three brothers, Kenneth, Milton, and Wilfred Herring.
Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of service 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. David McLeish officiating. Spring interment will be in the family lot in Dover Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Mayo Regional Hospital, 65 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426.
