The third annual Piscataquis River Festival, held at the Recreational Grounds in Guilford, was a huge success! Family and friends from all over the country came to gather on the rivers' edge to celebrate homecoming and enjoy a good old-fashioned community gathering. Many festival-goers started their day with breakfast at the United Methodist Church and then watched a wonderful small-town parade complete with music, fire trucks, clowns and floats. The Guilford library had a book sale and the Historical Society was open for tours. A wide variety of music was performed on stage by; Fishers of Men, Pig Muffin Band, Losing Touch, Taryn Lane, Ian Libby, In Other Words, and Thorn Hill. Local artisans and crafters products were found along River Street with all the traditional festival foods along the shady banks of the Piscataquis River. Other fun events were a classic car cruise-in, Firemen's Muster, chili cook-off, pee wee soccer match, Pirate Rec basketball game, kid's games sponsored and organized by Maine Highlands Credit Union and employees, a scavenger hunt, and horseshoe tournament. We were honored to have two veterans' memorials on display during this year's festival. One of them was Mobile Memories - unlocking the past, the Vietnam War memorial. This is a memorial dedicated to the soldiers from Maine who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Mobile Memories was provided by Linwood and Tina Green of Madison. We would also like to thank Darlene Emery for help with setting this up and Pam Goulette for managing the display during the festival. There was also a MIA memorial dedicated to soldiers from New England listed as missing in action. This display was developed by Guilford Kiwanis member, Ralph Eastman and was also attended by members of the United Veterans Honor Guard of Washington County. The Guilford Area Kiwanis and River Festival Committee would like to thank our sponsors: Blessed by beautiful sunny skies, this fundraising event, spearheaded by the Guilford Area Kiwanis, brought together many dedicated volunteers from various non-profits in the community as well as private citizens and businesses. A portion of the proceeds from the festival are being donated to help build an ice skating rink/skate park in Guilford, and also will be used to fund the 2008 Piscataquis River Festival. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes of any successful event and there are too many unsung heroes to list who are always there with a helping hand, a strong shoulder, financial donations, or advise that is right on target and given with heartfelt dedication. Our most sincere thanks and appreciation goes to those individuals without whom there would be no festival. The following organizations financial/material donations help make this Festival a day to look forward to every year; Dana and Joann Lovell, Bill Hume at North Maine Printers, Bennett construction, Foss Enterprises, Mountain's Market, Guilford Subway, Maine Highlands Credit Union, Lander & Sons, Hardwood Products Company, W.G. Blake's Agency, Town of Guilford, Hudson Avenue Florist, Eastern Gazette, Judy Craig www.thedailyme.com, Piscataquis Observer, and Moosehead Messenger. A very special thank you goes to Abbott Explorers and Cambridge Cruisers ATV Clubs for donating $1100 worth of toys during their "Christmas in July" toy drive to benefit the Kiwanis Christmas program for children of MSAD 4. Financial contributions were made by Guilford American Legion and Mt. Kineo Lodge #109. Mount Kineo lodge arranged for the Anah Shrine Clowns, Anah Shrine Mini Bikes, and Anah Shrine Whistling Belly Dancers to march in our parade. Plan on joining us for the 4th annual Piscataquis River Festival July 26th, 2008. |
