BARBARA SEAVEY SANDERS
CANAAN & GARDINER - Barbara Seavey Sanders, 80, died Oct. 18, 2003, at Robinson Health Care in Gardiner after a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Dexter, the youngest of 11 children of James and Lottie Seavey. She attended Dexter schools and graduated from Dexter High School. In 1947 she married Howard Sanders and moved to Canaan where she raised their three sons. She retired from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service in 1987. She moved from Canaan to her son Michael's home in Pittston in September of 2000 due to illness. Barbara was a life-member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served in numerous offices and was Past District Deputy Grand Matron of Sunrise Chapter No. 75 of Canaan. She was a long-time member of the Canaan Union Church and more recently the Church of the Nazarene in Skowhegan. She served as organist and taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by three sons, Mark of North Augusta and South Carolina, Michael and his wife, Carole, of Pittston, and Jeffrey of Canaan; two grandchildren, Eric and Lynn Sanders of Pittston; a brother, Calvin Seavey of Newport; and a sister, Myrtle Knowles of Dexter; a special friend, Brenda Lambert and her family of Benton; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be visiting hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Skowhegan, with the Rev. Verne Haskell officiating. Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Donations may be made in memory of Barbara to the Alzheimer's Care Center, 154 Dresden Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345.
