OBITUARIES

BERNICE E. SMITH
GREENVILLE- Bernice E. Smith, 94, died December 9, 2010, at C.A. Dean in Greenville. She was born February 7, 1916, in Greenville, daughter of Joseph and Emily (Doyon) Clark.

She graduated as the Valedictorian of Greenville High School, class of 1934, and received her RN in 1937, from the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, now part of Maine Medical Center in Portland. Bernice returned to Greenville and has worked at C.A. Dean Hospital for many years, "never really retiring" in her words. For a time she served as Director of Nursing at the Hospital, and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She also spent a great deal of time helping folks that were home bound, running errands, taking blood pressures, and caring for those who needed help.

She was a long time member of the Union Evangelical Church in Greenville. She was a member of the Ready Workers Society, where she served as President for 3 years and as Secretary for many years. She was a Past Patron of the Mowidausis Chapter of the Eastern Star in Greenville, and the Susie Carr Chapter of the Eastern Star in Sangerville.

As the wife of John Smith, Chief Fire Warden for the area, she spent a great deal of time assisting her husband, answering phones, and issuing fire permits.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years in 2001; a daughter and her husband, Emilynn "Kitty" and Bart Harvey, and a daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Jack Kirscht; 8 brothers, and 2 sisters.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Murray and her husband Darryl of Greenville; a sister, Colleen Martin of Belfast; a brother, Duane Clark and his wife Ann of FL; 5 grandchildren, Robert and Robbin Harvey of WI, Jan and Tom Barbas of MA, Deborah Schechter and Carl Lipo of CA, Mindy and Nick Hanson of Shirley, and Kelly Murray and her friend Seth Ostrosky of Dover-Foxcroft; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Friday, December 17, 2010, at the Union Evangelical Church in Greenville, where funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Saturday December 18th, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Veon officiating. Spring burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery.
