OBITUARIES

CHARLES PENTLAND
Veteran NEWPORT – Charles Pentland, 86, passed away January 18, 2008 at his residence. He was born February 8, 1921 at Stoneham, MA, a son of Roger and Doris (Elliot) Pentland.

Charlie attended Clark University and Andover-Newton Theological Seminary. He married the former Betty Mozingo on November 22, 1944. He served as a Captain in the U. S. Army during World War II and was in charge of an Army motor pool in occupied Japan. He was a vice president of personnel at Parker Manufacturing Company in Worcester, MA.

He was a certified lay minister and served in numerous churches throughout Maine and Massachusetts. As a jack of all trades, he also was a small engine repairman, a licensed electrician, a gunsmith, a clock repairman, a farmer and a gardener. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Charlie served as town moderator in Sutton, MA and had served as president of both the Sutton, MA and Newport, ME historical societies.

He was a past president of the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce. He also chaired the NAFA group which organized the 175th Newport anniversary celebration. Charlie was a member of the Corinna [ME] United Methodist Church, the Corinna Post #73 American Legion, and was also a member of the Small Engine and Tractors Association.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Betty of Newport, he is survived by 5 children: Sandra Wilson of Worcester, MA, Susan and her husband Kenneth Stowe of Topsfield, MA, Charles I. Pentland, Jr. of Mineral Wells, TX, the Rev. Edward J. Pentland and his wife Debbra of Whitinsville, MA, Priscilla and husband Stephen Hoekstra of Etna; 9 grandchildren, Laurel, Kelly, Sean, Heidi, Veronica, Martin, Benjamin, Jesse, and Sam; 4 great grandchildren. Charlie’s son Roger predeceased him in 1981.

Friends may call from 7-9 PM Monday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Tuesday at the Corinna United Methodist Church with the Revs. Sharon Lovejoy, Bruce Hudson and Edward Pentland officiating.

A spring committal service will be held 1 P.M. Friday, May 2nd, at the North Newport Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Corinna United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 418, Corinna, ME 04928.
