DR. ALLAN R. COREY
YARMOUTH - Dr. Allan R. Corey, 74, of Cousins Island, passed away peacefully at home on June 30, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. Allan was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Cumberland, where he grew up on a working cattle farm. He attended Greely institute and graduated in 1948. With his love of animals, Allan graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1952 with a BS in animal science and attended the University of Toronto, Canada and graduated in 1956 with a DVM, VS degree in veterinary medicine. He worked as a field veterinarian for the Maine Department of Agriculture from 1956-1960. In 1960, he became the veterinarian-in-charge of Animal Disease Control for the State of Maine. In 1962, Allan partnered in practice at Penquis Veterinary Service in Dover-Foxcroft for three years. He partnered at Westbrook Animal Hospital from 1965-1983. In 1983, he went on to give 11 1/2 years of service to the University of Maine at Orono and retired as associate professor emeritus of Veterinary Sciences. He continued to work part-time at Westbrook Animal Hospital until the time of his illness last year. Dr. Corey's many accolades include past president and honorary member of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, past president of the New England Veterinary Medical Association, past master and member of Masonic Lodge No. 36 and a member of the Kora Temple Shrine. A devoted family man, "Uncle Doc" loved spending time at his camp at Lake Moxie where he hunted, fished, and snowmobiled.
Dr. Allan R. Corey is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 48 years, Barbara G. Corey; a son, Robert A. Corey and his fiance, Rebecca Farrar, of Freeport; and a daughter, Joyce M. Love and her husband, Michael, of North Yarmouth. "Grampa" is survived by one grandson, Eric Love; and three granddaughters, Jennifer and Sabrina Corey, and Shannon Love. He is also survived by three sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, at the First Parish Congregational Church in Yarmouth. A committal service will be held following the service and reception at 2:30 p.m. at Blanchard Cemetery in Cumberland. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Allan may be made to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, P.O. Box 3624, Durham, NC 27712. Arrangements are with Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096.
