HENRY L. VARNEY
DETROIT—Henry L. Varney, 86, died May 9, 2005 at a Bangor hospital. He was born April 26, 1919 at Pittsfield, a son of Archie and Verna (Palmer) Varney. He attended school in Unity. Henry was employed at various woolen mills and also worked in the woods. He later operated his own business, Varney’s Detroit Salvage Scrap Iron and Metals, which he ran for 50 years, retiring at the age of 80. He was a member and past District Deputy Grand Master of the Phlentoma Odd Fellows Lodge #51. Henry was a former member of the Nazarene Church for 14 years. He also attended other churches in the area and was currently a member of the High Street Congregational Church in Newport. He married the former Ella Luce on August 11, 1940, who predeceased him on November 12, 1994.

He is survived by 5 children; Albert and wife Clara Varney of South Harpswell, Glenis Walker of Plymouth, Alfred and wife Glenis Varney of Burnham, Gloria and husband Norman Raymond of Detroit, and Mary and husband Ronald Loureiro of Detroit; a brother, Howard “Bud” Varney of Belmont; 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; several nieces and nephews; a daughter-in-law, Julia Varney of FL. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son Alton, and a son-in-law, Michael Walker, and sister-in-law Marion Varney.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Friday, May 13th, at the High Street Church, Newport, with Pastors Al. H. Worden and John Ring officiating. Burial will be in the Pittsfield Village Cemetery. Following the committal service, family and friends are invited to the home of Normand and Gloria Raymond in Detroit.
