REVEREND JANET E. McAULEY
PALMYRA – Janet Elisabeth McAuley, 79, died January 16, 2005 at Pittsfield following a brief illness. She was born November 5, 1925 at Chicago, Illinois, a daughter of Cochran and Edna (Blanch) McAuley. Janet’s long and varied education included a BA degree from the University of Chicago in 1945, a BS from the University of Illinois in 1948, an MS degree from Wellesley College in 1950, a PhD in Anatomy and Physiology, Indiana University in 1973, a Master’s degree in Religion from Indiana University in 1980, and a Master of Divinity degree from Yale-Berkley Divinity School in 1983. Her teaching career consisted of: Teaching Assistant, University of Illinois, 1947- 1948; Instructor, University of Missouri at Columbia, 1948-1949; Teaching Assistant, Wellesley College, 1949-1950; Instructor, Morton Jr. College in Illinois, 1950-1951; Professor, Indiana University at Bloomington, from 1951-1981, and Instructor, Southern Connecticut University at New Haven, 1982. She was also Director of the Project for Disabled Studies, Southern Connecticut University at New Haven from 1982-1983.

Her second career as a Pastor began with her ordination as Deacon by Bishop Jones in 1983; and her ordination into the priesthood by Bishop Frederick Wolf in 1984. After ordination, Janet began her 20 year ministry at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church until the time of her death. As an active part of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine, Janet served as Trustee, Camp Bishopswood, 1979-1997; Trustee, Coalition for Missions, 1984-1992; President of the Board, Bishopswood, 1988-1992; Diocesan Finance Committee member, 1984-1987; member, Committee on Holy Orders, 1996-2003; Adjunct Professor, Bangor Theological Seminary, 1988-2004; Pastor, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1984-2005; and Priest-in-Charge, Episcopal Church of the Messiah, Dexter, 1997-2002.

Despite her exceptional achievements in life, Janet will be remembered for her down to earth manner, and her willingness to be a pastor to the community at large.

She is survived by a cousin and her family, Joan Bettes of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; and by her St. Martin’s Parish church family.

A Eucharistic Mass in celebration of her life will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, January 22nd, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, U.S. Route 2, Palmyra, with the Right Reverend Chilton R. Knudsen, Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Maine, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Manitoba.
