JULIA LITTLEFIELD DOMKE
CORINNA & OLDTOWN - Julia Littlefield Domke, 93, passed away June 14, 2004 at an Orono health facility after a long illness. She was born August 17, 1910, at Old Town, the daughter of Chesley and Georgia (Rolfe) Littlefield. A graduate of Old Town High School, she continued her education at Springfield Women’s Institute, Springfield. In 1930 she graduated from Beal College, Bangor, and furthered her education at Eastern State Normal School in Castine, graduating in 1932. She also attended Summer Sessions at the University of Maine. A tireless educator, she began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse where she was solely responsible for the K-8 curriculum. She taught elementary grades in Nebraska as well as Maine. Her dedication to teaching extended beyond the school day when she would volunteer to help immigrant children learn English after school hours. After retiring, Mrs. Domke continued to substitute teach and tutor students. Her travels took her across the United States and into Europe and Asia where she enjoyed learning about different cultures. Mrs. Domke was a former member of the Katahdin Chapter, OES, and the Corinna Grange.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara Howard of Old Town, granddaughter Angela Howard of Deep River, CT, and several nieces and nephews.
At her request, there will be no funeral services. It was her desire that any contributions in her memory be sent to the Sebasticook Lake Association, c/o Mrs. Lorraine Stone, Treasurer, 177 Kitchen Hill Road, Newport, ME 04953, to assist in their ongoing activities. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.
