LT. COL. JOHN M. LANE, US ARMY, RETIRED
John M. Lane NEWPORT & BANGOR—Lt. Col. John M. Lane, United States Army, Retired, 88, died peacefully November 2, 2008 at his Bangor residence. He was born September 16, 1920 in Solon, a son of John and Jessie (Safford) Lane, Sr. He married Marguerite (Haseltine) on January 30, 1943 and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Engineering. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Barrows-Skidgel Post 105 American Legion and Newport Memorial Post 11191 Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Newport. John taught for 13 years at the Newport Junior High School. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marguerite of Bangor; 2 sons, John Michael Lane and wife Kathleen of Rockland and Mark and wife Patricia Lane of Newburgh; 2 daughters, Janie and husband Michael Ames of Newport and Cindy and husband David Hansberry of Litchfield, NH; 7 grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Daniel Elliot, Christopher and Derek Lane, Jessica and Katie Ames, Steven Hansberry and Dyane Dauphinee; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6-8 PM Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held 10 AM Friday, November 7th, with the Rev. George Darling officiating. Burial will be at noon following the funeral at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Smile Train Charitable Organization; 41 Madison Avenue, 28th Floor, New York, New York 10010.
