OBITUARIES

MELVA MARIE HALEY
GUILFORD, Melva Marie Haley, 87, died Thursday January 29, 2004. She was born September 29, 1916, to William and Mary Snyder in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Grove City High School in Grove City, Pennsylvania. She obtained her nursing degree at Jamison Memorial Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and an advanced nursing obstetrics degree at Margaret Hague Hospital in New Jersey. Melva worked in Minnesota as an obstetric RN until joining the service. She served during WWII from 1943-1945 as an RN in the Army Nurse Corp. in the Philippines. She met her husband, Manley A. Haley, who served in the Army Corp of Engineers in the Philippines, during WWII. They were both honorably discharged with the rank of Captain and married on December 27, 1945 and resided in Guilford. Melva was a long time active member of the United Methodist Church in Guilford, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was also active in the local Pony Club, American Legion, and was a member of the Zephyrus Club. Melva also held the position of president of Haley Construction, Inc. following the death of Manley in 1994, and was actively involved in running the company.

Melva is survived by three daughters, Kay Haley of Apex, North Carolina, Merry Lee Dennis and her husband Bruce of South Windsor, Connecticut, along with their three children, Sarah, Mark, and Catherine Dennis, and Jan Carter and her husband Philip of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also survived by one sister, Helen Brown and her husband, Harry of St. Louis, Missouri; four sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Haley Brewster of Hixson, Tennessee, Beth Haley of Sangerville, Jean Haley of Boylston, Massachusetts, and Dorothy Haley Ellis of Holden, Massachusetts. Melva was also loved by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 PM, Saturday, February 7, 2004 at the United Methodist Church in Guilford with the Rev. Dr. Margaret “Dodie” Stowe officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Friday February 6, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St. in Guilford. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Guilford Memorial Library, P.O. Box 177, Guilford, ME 04443 or to Gideon’s International, P.O. Box 1512, Cary, NC 27512 for bibles. Graveside committal services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford, with the Rev. Tom Bruce officiating. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.
